Wyevale East Nurseries  are doing a great job looking after our plants, they are doing a fantastic job,: Thanks team !

Here is our very own tunnel!!!

bit about us,,

WillmottFord Garden Design

Susan and Adele both studied BA in Garden Design at Hadlow College in association with the University of Greenwich. Susan is continuing her studies with a post graduate MA in Landscape Architecture while Adele is presently working at Great Dixter.
Coastal Drift is Susan and Adele's second joint entry to the Student Design & Build Award. Their application to the Award in 2010 was unsuccessful however the feedback from the judges did help in formulating the winning design for the Student Design & Build Award 2011.

Susan has over 20 years' experience as a professional designer with a background in exhibition design and changed direction to Garden Design in 2005. Although still studying at the University of Greenwich Susan has set up her own garden design business and also works freelance for Landscape Architects.

Adele has not left education either and is currently teaching the College Certificate in Garden Design at Hadlow College. As well as working at Great Dixter Adele also has set up her own garden design business and designs freelance for landscape contractors.

Plants Plants Plants !!!!!!

Plants - List 1, List 2 List 3 , Back up , back up, back up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to our surprisingly wet spring so far we are making sure we have plenty of back up plants for the show as at the moment ,we cant tell what will be looking its best in time for the show-
Its been great fun choosing plants , and more plant and ,,,,, you get it!

We have pittosporums in our garden to provide some solid planting among all the movement of the grasses and perennials- but had a little look at the buxus ball too,

Herbs- we have thyme and various herbs around the steps in the garden - lots of choice here:

Liz (left ) and Sue (right) discussing plants for around the steps

more herbs!

3 of our final tree selection :

Grasses for Coastal Drift

Grasses in Coast Drift

The grasses are an integral part to our design, with its texture and movements adding to the planting acting as a metaphor for water

Here in the plan you can see the swathes and movements of the planting represent water beneath the floating deck

The tree !

Here are two of our tree options - Eucalyptus gunnii
Due to 2 bad winters , Liz at Wyevale East Nurseries has found it very difficult to find Eucalyptus of a decent size as so many were wiped out, we have two here and some other alternate options- Arbutus unedo and Quercus suber

Arbutus unedo

A beautiful Eucalyptus, but too small for our garden , what a shame

Hello and welcome to the blog following the journey of  COASTAL DRIFT - a small show garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2012- Designed by Adele Ford and Susan Willmott

Coastal Drift - Designed By Susan Willmott and Adele Ford

To fill you in on how we got here so far:

Whilst we were both studying BA(Hons) Garden Design at The University Of Greenwich, we had entered into the Wyevale East Nurseries 'Student Design and Build Award' click here for more details on the competition and if you would like to enter this year - give it a go!

We had entered the previous year but had been unsuccessful, good job too as we were both snowed under with the pressures of the final year at uni ! Once the degree show had passed and we had regained all our lost sleep we put our heads together and decided to give it another go - and are so glad we did!
If you are a student in Garden Design or Horticulture - we recommend giving it a shot- even if you dont win you do receive feedback from RHS judges, so it is worth it for that alone.

I remember when we received the phone call from Richard at Wyevale East Nurseries- lets just say there were screams down the phone and a tear or two of joy from the both of us!

Since then we have had to fill out endless forms for the RHS, we are sourcing materials and plants - its very exciting times for all involved and we hope that you keep posted and join us on our journey from 'Paper to Plot'

Here is our plan at the time of the competition hand in: Coastal Drift
